What is LPG?
LPG is short for Liquified Petroleum Gas. Its often called
autogas by some petrol stations. Its a refined form
of petroleum and has a different tax classification
to petrol and diesel, which makes it cheaper than either.
It is also more environmentally friendly. In fact, its
reputation as a green fuel is what inspired the decision
to make it a different tax classification.

What are the benefits of using LPG?
The most notable benefit is the cost saving - depending
on how many miles you do a year, you may see your return
on investment within the first year. If you are a business
claiming mileage at 40 pence a mile, you will find the
true cost of motoring on LPG significantly lower - some
customers report true costs of around 5.8 pence per mile.
The savings come from the tax classification - for
the foreseeable future the tax rate is fixed at around
half the price of petrol / diesel.
LPG is also better for the environment - 20% lower
emissions than petrol, and 120 times less fine particles
from the exhaust than a diesel. Nitrous Oxide waste
is also 20 times lower than with diesel on urban roads.

What effect does it have on the vehicles performance?
As a rough rule of thumb performance in terms of mpg
can be up to 15% lower. However, with the costs being around
half the price of petrol, that still means a saving for
LPG users. Remember that if you want the performance of
petrol you can still use your petrol option by flicking
a switch in your armrest - LPG cars do not have the petrol
system removed.

Where can I fill up with LPG?

around the country. Click here for the complete list of

If I get a conversion will it be difficult to insure
the vehicle?
In a survey of 1000 companies, 94% said they would insure
LPG converted cars. Of these some insisted on seeing the
LPGA conversion certificate, and that the conversion be
carried out either direct by the manufacturer or by an
LPGA approved Autogas Convertor.

What should I look for in an LPG Conversion Company?
The
LPGA Approved Installer Scheme is the only one to receive
official government recognition and is increasingly a
requirement for any vehicles converted. Be certain to
look out for the logo and you will obtain an official
certificate with its silver embossed security tick.

How much will it all cost?
Costs vary with the size of your vehicle, the size of
the tank you want fitting and the vehicle itself. But
as a rule of thumb, prices start from around £1,600.
